Webkinz outage, part IX: They're baaa-aack!

My apologies to the legions of frustrated Webkinz parents who were following this blog in the wake of the Christmas Webkinz outage. I had a terribly busy week, and things only returned to normal yesterday.

I have good news and bad news to report. The good news: Our daughter's Webkinz is back to normal. She can get into the room and interact with her pet just like she did before December 23. Here's a shot of her yard, newly tricked out with a pool and other decorations:
Webkinz
The bad news: A lot of you are still struggling with your accounts, judging by the continued traffic to this site driven by Google searches for "webkinz account issues", "webkinz loading", and "webkinz technical difficulties." There have also been a few new comments on earlier entries reporting problems with the site, such as this one from yesterday (January 14, 2008):
They can't even respond to emails or have live people pick up the phones. What a joke of a company...

I hope someone from Webkinz actually cares that they are losing customers. I WILL NOT ever buy another Webkinz again because of this. IT stinks because we invested so much money already, but they will not get another dime from me ever again. This includes their parent company, GANZ. I will never buy any of their products again due to their poor customer service.
There was also another comment a few minutes ago:
This back and forth, we can get in we can't get in. Sometimes the site is working, sometimes its not. We will be looking for new internet pets to buy. We have decided not to invest anymore money than we already have into this company. They would have to pay us to stay at this point. Yes, the customer service is maddening. Like it was your fault? They didn't see why you were having the problem? They are denser than I thought. Or was that just a lame excuse for having a poor product that doesn't live up to it's claims? It's a fun site when it's up, my child really enjoys it (when he can get on), but to not be able to log on consistently is still causing trauma to these children as they try to take care of their animals. The very nature of this program makes it necessary for Ganz to get itself together! Wake up Ganz!!!
At this point, it's worth explaining the interactions I had with Ganz prior to my daughter's account returning to normal. It may help others get back into their accounts.

On Saturday, January 5, I followed the recommendation of one of the commenters on an earlier post. He/she said:
Go to Customer Support on the Webkinz home page. Click on "I keep getting an error message" and at the bottom of the list on that page there is a option,"I cannot load my room". You can enter your name and such - they claim they will get back to you w/in 1-3 days.
Here is the link to the Webkinz "error message" page. The "cannot load room" link is the last one. I clicked it. I filled out the form, and shortly received an email which read:
Date: Sat, 5 Jan 2008 23:51:41 -0500
To: ianlamont@++++
Subject: I Cannot Load My Room
From: "Webkinz Support"
PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL.

This is an automatic response to let you know that Webkinz World has received your information.

A Customer Support representative will respond to your request in approximately 1 to 3 business days. Please note this time estimate may change without notice if we are receiving a high volume of requests.

Webkinz World Update: For more information about Webkinz World and the Clubhouse, please visit the Parent's Area on the Webkinz World homepage at www.webkinz.com.
After three days, there was no improvement. On the fourth day (January 9), I received this message:
Subject: Webkinz Customer Support - About your room

Now, after seeing this message, we were very excited. We were cured!

Unfortunately, our hopes were misplaced. We had the same problem attempting to get into our daughter's Webkinz room that night, and for the next few days.

However, on Saturday, January 12, we were once again able to get into the room. My daughter was very happy, and proceeded to blow all of her Kinzcash on decorations for her pet's room. But her pet was sick -- despite spending lots of Kinzcash on "medicine", her dog was hurting -- the "heart" and "hunger" scores were low, because she hadn't been able to care for it during the outage. In my opinion, Ganz should have reversed her medicine expenditures during the outage and upped her heart and hunger ratings to 100.

Nevertheless, we're still very happy that she's back online. I don't know if we'll be buying any Webkinz next Christmas, though ...

  1. Hooray for her. The Webkinz combo of real toys and virtual worlds has so much potential. They're customer service should set them apart. Too bad it's in a negative way right now. Thanks for the update.

  2. I am SOOOO wishing I'd done some research before I bought Webkinz for my daughter's mid-January birthday. One daughter was able to set-up an account and register her pet. The other daughter set up her account, registered her pet, and then got an error message when she went to the employment office. The system then dropped her back at the "Adoption Lady" and now she can't log in, because the system doesn't recognize her informaion, but if we try to re-register her, it comes up saying the pet code has already been used. Tell everyone to avoid WebKinz. I much prefer Bella Sara. Granted, it only focuses around horses, but my kids have had none of the hassles and all of the fun. (and no guilt over starving, unhappy, inaccessible pets!)

  3. Check again. Our three accounts are missing EVERYTHING as of this morning. Nothing in the dock, and the rooms are EMPTY. My kids are going to freak. I just got an email from webkinz saying to check and send in another ticket with my phone number and I checked and everything is gone. What a rip off.

  4. has anyone gotten any satisfaction with the company? My daughter lost every single object she had, and her entire house is empty. has anyone been told how to fix this issue?

  5. Two nights ago my daughter and I were playing on webkinz, and we went to do her daily kinzcare. When we clicked on the day, it gave us a message saying "Unable to connect, you are now being logged out." Since then, everything is missing in her dock and in her rooms. She is heartbroken. We can access the account, but anytime we do anything that would reward us with an "item" for our dock, it never shows up and automatically logs us out. Unfortunately, nobody at Ganz cares. If they cared, they would have left more than 18 spaces for an email address. Most standard forms hold at least 40 characters. So, we had to set up a new email address to even send an email, which has still had no response. Contacting their office headquarters has done nothing. My six year old daughter has spent all her free time trying to earn extra money doing chores around the house to save up for trading cards and more webkinz.
I feel like I have been completely ripped off, which wouldn't even bother me except for the fact that it also involved ripping off my child. Do they realize the despair they have caused our children??? Imagine a child carrying a little coin purse filled with all their money in it as they entered a store to purchase a toy they worked days to earn. Then, imagine them walking up to the item they wanted, picking it up... only to have a shoplifter steal their coin purse out of their hands, leaving them moneyless. Imagine the despair that child feels when they have the toy in their hand finally and have no means to buy it anymore.
That is what our children are experiencing. They are aware of the site now, they want to play on it, and we are the ones that have to sit here and try to explain in simple terms that they just can't get to the site today, or tomorrow, probably the day after that, and frankly ... they may not ever get their stuff back.
It sickens me to know that people don't care enough to fix the problems and help resolve the hurt these kids are experiencing. I will be contacting our news station, maybe they can help. If not, I suppose I will sit on my hands while Ganz continues to get rich.

  6. Wow...I'm glad I'm not the only one with disappointed kids. My daughter freaked out when she logged on yesterday morning only to find that her 4 rooms were ALL empty. She spent so much time earning her kinzcash to purchase and place particular things for each room. Her dock is empty too. It was like she was virtually robbed! My son logged in to check on his pet only to find that his stuff was missing too. Their pets are still ill but we can't even feed them because the store they normally purchase at has no food to offer! It's all blank!!! I hope these problems will be resolved soon.

  7. Wow...only hours after i last posted does the site seem to be up and running properly. we managed to purchase food and feed the poor starving animals and excersised them back to health. let's hope the site maintains this way...

  8. Unfortunately, the site still isn't working for us. All the stores are still empty, all items are still missing, and my child's pets are on the brink of starvation and all ill. I am happy to hear some problems are getting resolved, maybe they will resolve our issues soon.

  9. I'm wondering if this is on new accounts only? I've had my account since August, and while I'm constantly frustrated at being kicked off the site when I try and load a room, or the stores etc. during prime hours (and sometimes off hours), the only stuff I've had go missing (thankfully) is the clothes my webkinz is currently wearing.

My neice's account was opened last April and she's been ok as well so far.

My big complaint (other than spending so much time staring at "I'm sorry we cannot connect to WebKinz world right now") is the speed. OK, Christmas Day and Boxing Day the site got slammed, while they should have expected it, sometimes one can't plan for huge amounts of traffic. But by now they should have been able to upgrade to handle the increased traffic. And WHY oh why are they continuing to put out new pets (six this month I believe) when they can't get the website properly running? After all, that IS the point of the stuffed animals, right?

And of course, the entire LACK of any sort of customer or technical support through Ganz - they seriously shot themselves in the foot with this one. I love the site, when it's up and running, which is less and less unfortunately.

  10. ANOTHER frustrated customer. My 8 year old daughter got her new pet for Xmas and we can't get registered. What a disappointment!

  11. We have issues too. The code wouldn't work and we're a new user. I called and they needed some Service ID, which I needed to get via their online tech support form. So I go to their website and I get this:
    http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6870/webkinzgi7.pnghttp://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6870/webkinzgi7.png

Good times. So I finally resolve it myself, register my kid, and now the website has been stuck on "loading" for about 15 minutes. My kid is bored with this, and I'm pretty mad.

  12. There is still no resolution on my end. I have officially filed a complaint with the BBB. I also discovered that I am not the first, and will obviously not be the last to do so. It seems some people got their problems resolved via the BBB. I am crossing my fingers and hoping it doesn't take a full 14 days for them to resolve the problems.

  13. I got a call from Webkinz yesterday afternoon. The person said that it will take another three weeks to get my son's account fixed. As compensations, they gave him a choice of a free duck or penguin pet code.

  14. I got a call today from Webkinz. The lady told me that she has called several people today who were all experiencing similar situations. Our problem was with items disappearing, no items showing up in the stores, and empty rooms. She told us to clean out our cache and delete cookies. She asked if I knew how to do that. I laughed and said, "Uh, ya!" I really didn't think that was the problem, considering I do that regularly anyway. She said they had fixed our account late last night/ early this morning and to try what she said then reload the site.
IT WORKED!!! We are so excited that things are back to normal. Unfortunately, I had to file a complaint with the BBB to even get them to return my call.
If anyone else is experiencing the same problems as we were having, try doing what she told us to do... maybe that will help others.

  15. I guess I seem to be the "lucky one." IF I can log on, all my stuff is there, but..I can never log on. The site quits while the items in my dock are loading. Other than trying to get on to the site, my only other problem is with buying and naming a room. When you get to the point that you have so many webkinz, you need to purchase your own rooms for new adoptions. Okay, no problem, but...when you try to name it "Quackers room", I get a message that says, "I'm sorry, you have used a word that is not allowed." I tried for weeks to get a hold of Ganz, finally found something after Dec 23, sent the e-mail, got a response that it was fixed. Tried again, NOPE! Sent another e-mail, haven't received a response. It's only been 2 weeks. Jeez! Between my two daughter's thay have over 30 webkinz. And they want MORE! I have been trying to steer them toward barbiegirls.com and other virtual sites hoping beyond hope that they will discover something "cooler." So far, it hasn't worked. They just got the duck today (btw he's very cute) 1st daughter got it adopted, but was logged out as soon as she tried to feed it. Have tried 18 times to get on and atleast feed the poor duck, to no avail. Ganz should be ashmaed of themselves for this situation. This is a PR nightmare for them and will soon be FUBAR!

  16. With room naming, I've noticed that since the beginning, there are more words you can't use than what you can - I wrote a letter saying if they didn't want to explain each one that was not allowed, how about putting up a list of what IS allowed - it'd be a short list, that's for sure.

The gardens are wonky now - they introduced new functionality in the sinks (can brush teeth and such), and now the gardens don't recognize about 25% of the crops, so you have to remove and replant - but Wait! You can't plant anything! So eventually you'll be left with a whole lot of empty nothing. *sigh* I wish they'd fix the current issues before introducing all the new stuff, and I'm one of the lucky ones who can even GET in.

  17. I was wondering if anyone out there has the same issue that we have. My daughter has 10 webkins and have had no problems until 4 days ago. When she went to login, she realized her password was changed. We dealt with that and changed her password. When she went into her fully decorated rooms, she found everything had been removed and almost all her cash spent. She did give her password to a "friend" but I can't proceed or accuse until I hear back from someone in Webkinz World. She is very distraught, learned a good lesson about not sharing her password, but we need to get this resolved... I don't want this "friend" to get away with this and I want my daughter to have fun with this again...

  18. Where is the site? It has been a couple of weeks now that when I go to the site, I get a completely white page on my computer and NOTHING shows up at all !!!!! I had problems with my account in October 2007 which eventually was fixed. But since January 2008, I can not even access the site at all. The page is blank.
Can someone respond to my particular problem?

  19. I just sent complaints about Webkinz lack of customer service to the Better Business Bureau in both U.S and Canada. I would encourage anyone else who has the time and energy to do the same. Webkinz is so popular with the kids that they MUST change their customer service policies...If many parents contact the BBB, change just might happen. I am so frustrated but now at least I feel I was able to vent my feelings and seek change.

  20. Feb.18,2008 it still doesn't work right. It is very disappointing to a child. They are learning to care for animals and learn about money, then they cannot even log in to do it. I have 3 kids and each one is spending too much time just trying to log in. I hope Webkinz can fix this. Time is too precious to waist on this Website.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My problem is that my kids' pets are TOO healthy??!! Every day, even though they don't take care of them, all 3 levels are at 100 all the time. So now they're losing interest at even taking care of them, since they are too full to eat, etc. Of course, I can't get any answers from CS.

  22. I too have just cintacted the BBB about all thw Webkinz problems and missing items!

  23. I had just bought a webkinz for my son. After we did the whole adoption process, it would not let us login. It kept saying that the account information did not match theirs. When we tried to do the adoption process again it say the code was already in use. I put the thing back in the bag and took it back up to Hallmark. Hallmark then had the nerve to tell me that they do not accept returns on the webkinz, I told the lady thats to bad because I was not leaveing the store until she exchanged the webkinz or gave me my money back. I felt bad for getting so mad at the cashier because she was just doing her job, so i told her to get me a manager. She said the manager was not there, so I told her to then call the manager at home. Sure enough the manager told the cashier to exchange the webkinz. I then got home and everything worked great. Then three days later Webkinz started doing site maintance. Now we can no longer log on to the site. All we recieve when we click on the login button is a white screen. A lot of are friends are having the same problem, so I know it is not our computer or internet connection like webkinz trys to blame. So now we are stuck with a worthless product once again. I am going to look into starting a class action lawsuit against this company. Im sure their is a lawyer out there who will take it and I am sure their are enough customers who will sign on. There is not a jury in the world who would not grant a judgement in favor for a million sad children.

  24. For the white screen that appears while trying to log in try uninstalling real player!! Mine was doing the same thing and when I uninstalled real player it worked!! To uninstall go to Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs, find Real Player in the list and uninstall.

  25. I'd like to respond to all of the people who are still having trouble with their Webkinz.

First, my apologies for not responding sooner. I just changed jobs to a high-pressure position, and only recently has my personal life returned to some semblance of normality.

Second, I would like to say that after listening to all of your complaints and pleas for help, and watching my own daughter become more and more attached to this game, I can't wonder if our desperation to get the game back in working order isn't somewhat misplaced.

So, here's my advice: If you have tried the various tips offered by me and the many commenters on these pages, and your Webkinz is still not working, my advice is to forget about it. It's tough for the kids who have put so much into it, and for you, after spending money on the toys and gifts, but it's just not worth getting angrier and angrier at a company which is clearly unable and/or unwilling to help. The lawsuit will benefit no one, except for a bunch of class-action lawyers.

There are other toys and creative options for your children. And I know this seems like a radical suggestion, but maybe it might be fun to take some time away from glowing screens and instead spend a few hours playing with them in the real world. Get out the board games, soccer ball, and drawing pads, and have some fun with them. Talk with them while you play, and listen to what they have to say. They may not like to be pulled away from the computer at first, but your attention means a lot to them, and the more you interact with them, the higher all of your "heart" settings will become.

There will be plenty of video games to play with later on, but the time you can spend with son and daughter at this age can't ever be replaced.

    Sincerely,

    Ian (author of this blog)

  26. March 29, 2008:
We are having the exact same problems with Webkinz. Three new stuffies, all properly registered, just yesterday! Now today, the three kids cannot get into their accounts because of "Wrong Password Crap". We will be emailing all our friends through school, church, all the ski clubs, Scouts, etc. NEVER PURCHASE WEBKINZ - YOUR KIDS ARE GUARANTEED TO BE DISAPPOINTED. Now us parents know why these rip-offs are all on sale (big time), in Red Deer, Alberta. We all should complain to the "BBB" and have this Webkinz/Gantz Rip-Off Companies go flat broke!
    Thanks for reading.

  27. I don't know that I'm having the exact same issue as the previous posts, but my kids have been unable to access Webkinz.com for over a week. We click on the link and get a white screen and an "error on page" message. I can access WEBKINZ FAQ (strange since I can't access the log in page). FAQ told me to download Flash Player (which I have) then recommended clearing my cache (which I also did). Still nothing. I found a post on Yahoo suggesting this link:
    http://www.webkinz.com/us_en/
I was able to access the site. Wonderful! However, once I got past typing in my son’s username and password...it wouldn't go any further. I don't really understand what is going on with this website, but I'm very disappointed! Further more in order for me to contact anyone at webkinz, according to the FAQ...
When you’re logged into Webkinz World and you have a question, you can click on the “Contact Us” link in the newspaper index. Impossible if you can't log in!

  28. I am having the same problem with the white screen and have tried all the suggestions. Nothing. Even more frustrating is the lack of response in tech support!!

  29. We have not had any problems since maybe 1 week ago. My kids have about 15 webkinz but now we log in the username and password and all we get is the menu bar at the bottom which shows all the tings my kids have bought. I Downloaded the "FLASH PLAYER, I have cleared all "COOKIES". Can't do a thing. My kids are really frustrated and so am I.
